A CLOSER LOOK AT SESSIONS

Dear colleagues,

With the Asia and the Pacific Transport Forum happening very soon, we are sharing highlights of the sessions, and how they reflect the pressing issues of the transport sector today. This installment of the newsletter features the events on Wednesday and Thursday: the launch of the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory, a discussion with the airline industry on how they plan to navigate the post-pandemic, and a session on applying Big Data for transport policy decisions.

First Workshop on the Implementation of the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory
2 p.m. - 4: 30 p.m., 26 August (Wednesday)

The Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO), formed by a coalition of development organizations, is set to be a data and knowledge hub to collect, verify and interpret information on road safety conditions and accidents throughout Asia and the Pacific region.

The APRSO will help close the data gap for road safety and allow policy makers to make informed decisions on how best to ensure that all road users - motorists, pedestrians alike - are kept safe through engineering, policy, or law enforcement interventions.

This workshop is by invitation only, but the APRSO's work will be public. Expect announcements of how you can get involved with the APRSO during the week of the Forum.

Taking off During the COVID Storm: Challenges in Re-opening International Aviation in the Asia-Pacific Region
10 a.m. - 11: 30 a.m., 27 August (Thursday)

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought international air travel to an unprecedented halt. Around the world, we see grounded planes and empty terminals. But domestic flights are rebounding, and international flights are set to follow.

Countries are seeking to balance the economic recovery with the increased risk for subsequent waves of infection. Hear from members of the aviation sector from ADB’s Developing Member Countries on their plans. This session aims to provide a platform towards a coordinated and harmonized approach among all stakeholders in the aviation sector.

Enhancing the Role of Big Data in Promoting Sustainable Development of Transport Systems
2 p.m. - 3: 30 p.m., 27 August (Thursday)

ADB is developing a comprehensive sectoral report: the Asian Transport Outlook. This report will cover transport infrastructure, operations and policies in Asia and the Pacific region.

The Asian Transport Outlook will assess how well aligned transport policies and investments are with relevant international transport targets under the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, as well as in areas such as quality infrastructure.

Concurrently, there are opportunities for big data analytics to play an increasingly important role in guiding developing Asian countries in their approach to transport system management and operations. This session will share how countries are using digital data to create smarter transport systems that are more efficient. resilient, and environmentally sustainable.
