Cities are increasingly exploring innovative transport solutions to address congestion, emission, and unequal access to mobility. Beyond traditional road and rail systems, new modes of transport and emerging that can complement existing networks and improve connectivity in complex urban environments.
This session will focus on innovative emerging modes of urban transport, particularly urban cable car systems, which are gaining recognition as efficient and adaptable solutions for cities facing geographical constraints, dense development, or limited space for conventional infrastructure. Once mainly associated with tourism or mountainous areas, cable cars are now being integrated into public transport networks, offering reliable travel times, relatively small infrastructure footprints, and the ability to overcome geographic barriers such as hills, rivers, and existing infrastructure.
Drawing on international experiences from Latin America, Europe, and South Asia, as well as ADB-supported projects in Nepal, the session will explore how cable cars can enhance last-mile connectivity, improve access to underserved neighborhoods, and complement mass transit systems. It will also discuss key planning, design, financing, and implementation considerations.
By the end of the session, participants will:
