Building on the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport Implementation Plan, this session will examine how systematic progress monitoring can help identify what is working, identify where challenges persist, and how countries can implementation.
Monitoring is essential to ensure that the Decade's ambitions translate into real improvements in safety, accessibility, resilience, and decarbonization. The session will present the latest thinking on monitoring approaches, drawing on insights from recent expert workshops in Geneva and Washington, DC, and highlighting how structured frameworks can enhance transparency, comparability, and accountability across the region.
As a practical regional example, it will highlight insights from the Asian Transport Outlook, demonstrating how systematic data collection and indicator development support informed planning. An interactive world café discussion will enable participants to explore how countries with varying data availability and institutional capacity can benefit from monitoring frameworks, what steps are needed to address data gaps, and how monitoring can guide action throughout the decade.
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Understand DMC needs for data to monitor progress toward UN Decade objectives.
- Identify opportunities for regional collaboration and coordinated data efforts to track progress.
- Develop strategies to address data gaps and strengthen capacity for effective monitoring among developing countries.
