Technology Profile

Smart Management of Drinking Water Supply and Related Services

Real-time monitoring of performances of drinking water supply system: The selected performance parameters (daily, monthly, and annually) are captured and uploaded using a mobile application, and the data captured is analyzed and displayed on a website. The system has been developed for Gujarat In-village Piped Water Supply Scheme, having more than 16,000 such schemes, and is being piloted in 10 Gram Panchayats of Kutchh district of the state. It helps to monitor various performance parameters based on evidence in real time, which guides the managers as well the policy makers to improve service delivery.

Application for assessing status of access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH): SIGMA Foundation developed an application to collect program or project-specific data using a smartphone to collect locational and attribute data on access to WASH services, developed a website with a geographic information system (GIS) backbone for displaying the analyzed data on a dashboard to support decision making in improving service delivery and program management.

Good laboratory practices for water quality testing and laboratory performance monitoring:
SIGMA Foundation used the Membrane Filtration Technology (MFT) for testing for the presence of E. Coli in water testing laboratories and following Good Lab Practice Model (GLPM) for resource efficient and dependable test results. The success of the MFT indicates that it reduces sample preparation time, provides presence or absence information within 24 hours, and allows for removal of bacterio-static or cidal agents that would not be removed in Pour Plate, Spread Plate, or MPN techniques. SIGMA Foundation has the capability of conducting real-time monitoring of laboratory performances for more effective monitoring of water quality management system.

Data analytics: SIGMA Foundation analyzes big data on various themes like water quality and access to drinking water services as well as other data generated through programs such as management information systems to bring out evidences for guiding the program management in improving service quality.
