Technology Profile
| SMEC International covers all aspects of the water cycle, from desalination, stormwater management, water supply for drinking, irrigation, and urban use to end treatment of wastewater and its subsequent reuse, providing holistic services for design, development, and monitoring of water management. The approach and technology provided by SMEC International have been utilized in the following key cases: (i) improvement in water availability to meet competing water demands in the state of Karnataka, India by implementing integrated water resources management, which improved water efficiency in agriculture irrigation and provided economic opportunities to improve rural income of farmers; (ii) supporting and executing the Indian government’s strategic plan to ensure sustainable water supply to a densely populated area impacted by water scarcity and | disease caused by arsenic and fluoride contamination of the groundwater in 1,400 villages of Sonbhadra, Bundekhand, and Uttar Pradesh; (iii) reduction in non-revenue water management mechanism in Greater Colombo, Sri Lanka from 49% in 2012 to less than 18% by 2020, while also increasing public awareness and institutional strengthening for nonrevenue water management; and (iv) improvement of the Second Irrigation and Drainage project in Kazakhstan which rehabilitated infrastructure, strengthened efficiency (with the help of information and communication technology), and established transparency in water delivery. SMEC International’s water management services have been vital for poverty reduction, environmental protection, reduced inequalities, and sustainable economic development. These solutions have bridged the gap in access to last mile connectivity for water supply, helping to meet several Sustainable Development Goals in the region. |
