About Japan Education Center of Environmental Sanitation (Jeces)

Since 1966, Japan Education Center of Environment Sanitation (JECES), has played an important role in Japan as the only professional educational and research institution on the Johkasou system. JECES has trained more than two hundred thousand qualified Johkasou technicians (Johkasou Operator, Johkasou Installation Worker, Johkasou Desludging Technician, Johkasou Inspetor) and developed the core technologies of Johkasou systems. JECES has also been offering technical information to the administration in making technical standards and regulations.

We believe the experiences and knowledge accumulated in JECES would be useful for the other countries tackling on the challenges related to the decentralized wastewater management.

Our Products

In Japan, when a new house or a new building equipped with flush toilet is set up in unsewered district, a Johkasou must be installed according to the Johkasou Act. Every Johkasou is designed to achieve a BOD effluent of 20 mg / L or less, and to treat not only black water (toilet wastewater), but also gray water (wastewater from the kitchen, bath, and laundry). The purpose of the Johkasou Act is to promote the appropriate treatment of domestic wastewater, to maintain good water quality of public water bodies and a healthy living environment, and to improve public health via Johkasou systems. To achieve this purpose, it is essential to strengthen regulations at each stage: manufacturing, installation, operation and maintenance, as well as desludging of Johkasou. This requires a clear understanding of the people who engage in the Johkasou businesses and the business itself, including thoroughly defining the responsibilities of concerned individuals and ensuring that they are professionally certified. The Johkasou Act provides qualifications for Johkasou installation workers and Johkasou operators, as well as for registration and licensing of systems for Johkasou businesses, installation, operation and maintenance, and desludging.
