Responding to Domestic Violence: Practical Tips for Survivors and Allies​


This session will present an overview of what encompasses domestic abuse and provides valuable self-assessment questions for individuals who may not realize they are in an abusive situation. Remembering that any response is an individual decision, this session provides tips for personal response in an abusive environment and an overview of issues to be considered when living with abuse and when planning to leave. Tips for decreasing stress in the difficult environment we now find ourselves in, considerations for family/friends/allies who may suspect or know that their friend is in an abusive situation, and a list of local resources will be shared.

Speaker's Profile


                        

Beverly Roach

Beverly Roach is the Security Specialist assigned at AFRM. Prior to this, she was a Security Consultant in ADB HQ’s Security Operations Center, where HQ and FO security and safety information is gathered, analyzed, and disseminated. She is also the chief Women’s Security Awareness trainer for ADB and UN agencies in the Philippines. Bev served in the Canadian Army for 21 years followed by a career in high-risk security. During 14 years of living in diverse conflict zones from Kabul to Darfur, her primary focus was to enable organizations she worked with to operate safely within their environment so that they could continue program delivery. She participated in the Canadian Army trial for women in non-traditional roles in West Germany in the early 1980s; has overseen major security projects; and has handled immediate responses in the face of devastating attacks.

Bev has taught and developed a number of security programs over the years. She has taught security programs for staff deployed to high-risk environments and continues to teach the UN Women’s Security Awareness Training to women around the globe. She developed the ADB information package on Domestic Violence and continues to work in this regard. She is also passionate about ensuring diversity and inclusion in the security program.

Bev has master’s degrees in both Security Management and her other passion, Sports Management. She has been a Certified Protection Professional with the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) since 2008.

Bev started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 52. She is now a certified self-defense instructor and teaches seminars as part of her security programs. Her current personal project is the development of a bespoke security awareness program for women in isolated communities in the Arctic.
