Water, Sanitation, and Child Health Outcomes in Indonesia
Author/s: Sri Irianti, Puguh Prasetyoputra, Milan Thomas
Unsafe water and sanitation can affect maternal and child health outcomes through low-quality drinking water and exposure to disease. We use data from the 2013 Indonesia Basic Health Survey to identify determinants of diarrhea in under-five children of Indonesia. Simulation based on that analysis shows that improved access to safe drinking water and sanitation would reduce the burden of diarrheal disease by 18%. We also analyze how water collection responsibilities deteriorate are a barrier to antenatal and postnatal care services. These findings highlight the importance of improving water supply and sanitation for achieving improved health outcomes in Indonesia.
