Employment and Health Among Older Men and Women in Viet Nam: Findings from a National Survey

Author/s: Thanh-Long Giang, Donghyun Park, Aiko Kikkawa, Dang-Tue Nguyen

This paper used the nationally representative data in 2019, namely the Survey on Older Persons and Social Health Insurance (OPSHI), with the sample size of 3,049 older persons (those aged 60 and over), of which 1,219 were older men (accounted for 41.5%) and 1,830 were older women (accounted for 58.5%). The paper explores the employment situation of older persons with an in-depth gender perspective, using their individual characteristics (such as age group, the highest educational level, marital status, and income-related indicators), household characteristics (such as place of residence, living arrangements) and health-related situations (such as difficulties in activities in daily living, and chronic diseases). We found that there were significant differences in working rates between various groups of older men and women in terms of age group, residential place, marital status, and educational level. Controlling for age, education, marital status, place of residence, and (in)sufficient income for daily living, the results from logistic models indicated that health issues were strongly associated with lower probability to work for both genders. In all tests and regression models, that age and health condition were consistently related with lower working probability of older persons implied an important consideration in raising normal retirement ages for both men and women.
