Economic Impact of Solid Waste Management in the Solomon Islands

Author/s: Vivian Castro-Wooldridge, Aimee Hampel-Milagrosa

Following ADB’s Guidelines for the Economic Analysis of Projects, 2017, the main purpose of the study is to develop a pilot economic analysis methodology that allows Pacific Developing Member Countries (PDMCs) to quantify the economic impact of their current levels of solid waste management (SWM) funding and policy settings and to measure the economic benefits from improved SWM. For this paper, the proposed improvements to SWM that are detailed in the Solomon Islands (SI) SWM Roadmap 2021 are used and combined with realistic costs for the various interventions and activities over a five-year implementation period and a 25-year project period. There are various scenarios prepared in the SI SWM Roadmap, and economic analysis was prepared for the option that includes a new sanitary landfill with a total capital cost of US$5.4 million and estimated O&M cost of US$983,000 per year. The economic benefits of improved SWM can be categorized into three broad areas: (i) health, (ii) environment and (iii) economic impacts.
