Session 2B: Education and Skills

Can providing information to parents improve their participation in their children's schooling and learning outcomes? Evidence from a field experiment in Indonesia

Author/s: Niken Rarasati, Daniel Suryadama, Floriischa Tresnatri

We study how regularly informing parents on their children's learning progress and ways to be actively involved in child's education could improve learning outcomes. We implemented a year-long field experiment in 65 primary schools in Central Java, Indonesia. We find that the interventions increase parental involvement at home and communication with teachers. The information on child's progress also increases parental demand to teachers, which increases teacher's motivation and support to students' learning. Overall, we find no impact on student's numeracy skills. However, we find a significant increase in the numeracy skills of students from poor families.
