The Impact of COVID-19 on Tourists’ Destination Choice: The Case of Thailand

The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have changed tourists’ travel behavior. Yet, there is very limited empirical assessment of how preferences of tourists have changed. This paper aims to contributing to this emering literature by studying the case of Thailand. We use monthly domestic tourist arrival data of 77 provinces in Thailand for the months January to August for the years 2019 and 2020 to analyze econometrically how tourist destinations choice have changed. Using a panel regression with monthly fixed effects, we find that tourists now tend to prefer destinations with a more dispersed population and are ready to travel further from Bangkok. Our results further indicate that tourists avoid areas with recent COVID-19 cases and that they have become indifferent to main cities, UNESCO heritage sites, beaches, and national parks. In July 2020, the Thai government started to distribute a substantive travel subsidy. We show that while the subsidy helped to boost domestic tourism, the travelers’ preference have changed little.
